Important Information About Rabies Vaccination from the CT State Veterinarian Rabies vaccination is mandated by State statute to protect the public and other animals from exposure to rabies. Connecticut is endemic for wildlife rabies. As we progress into Spring and warmer weather, wildlife will become more active increasing the likelihood of interactions with the public and pets. Rabies vaccinations should not be delayed especially in situations where a pet has never been vaccinated or when a wildlife exposure has occurred and a booster vaccination is needed as part of the post-exposure treatment. (The first rabies vaccination takes 30 days for the animal to develop full immunity and protection against a challenge. The pet would not be considered currently vaccinated until the 30 days have passed.) Both situations should be treated as priorities for care. more... CVMA Recommends Veterinary Team Members Wear A Mask for Protection from COVID-19 Since veterinary team members potentially come into close contact with clients and co-workers each day, the CVMA is recommending wearing masks while at work. Masks can help decrease the spread of COVID-19 by decreasing (but not eliminating) the spread of virus-laden droplets from infected individuals, including asymptomatic shedders. Please note that wearing a mask is NOT a substitute for social distancing. Veterinary teams should maintain a 6' distance from one another and clients whenever possible. The CVMA is not recommending use of N95 masks that are needed by healthcare workers, rather any type of mask that can protect the wearer from exposure to COVID-19 particles. Ordinary surgical masks or homemade cloth masks will do the trick (as long as they are changed and washed frequently). The University of Florida Health’s department of anesthesiology has developed 2 prototypes for masks that can be produced in large quantities using materials already found in hospitals and medical facilities. For more details click here more... List of Authorized Compounding Pharmacies in CT In recent months, several members have contacted the CVMA to request a list of compounding pharmacies that are authorized to compound and distribute non-patient specific medications in Connecticut. State regulations allow for non-sterile, non-patient specific compounded medications to be provided to veterinarians by both 503A (non sterile) Pharmacies (thirty day supply only) and 503B (sterile) Outsourcing Facilities. 503B Outsourcing Facilities may provide sterile (as in injectables), non-patient specific, compounded medication to veterinarians as well as quantities greater than 30 days worth of non-patient specific non-sterile medications. The CT Department of Consumer Protection has provided the following link for a list of 503b facilities https://portal.ct.gov/DCP/Drug-Control-Division/Drug-Control/Sterile-Products Please note that this list is composed of 503b facilities both within and outside of the state of Connecticut that have appropriately registered with the state of Connecticut and the Food and Drug Administration. The state of Connecticut does not endorse any of these companies and does not maintain a list of the products that they are permitted to compound and distribute. The companies on this list are permitted to send medication that is not patient specific to a pharmacy or practitioner for dispensing or administration. Please contact the individual business to determine what products they can provide. If you have questions, please contact the individual pharmacies directly. more... Use of Cannabidiol in Animals Connecticut explicitly allows the sale of CBD hemp products following the enactment of Public Act 19-3 last month.
